Hope

Read this scripture just now in my studies, and felt comforted by it.  There is hope, and the Lord can lift us out of our pits of burden, of darkness, despair, sorrow, etc., and put our feet on solid ground of rock and teach us the right path, setting us toward the right way.

"I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."  Psalms 40: 1-3

Sometimes, we feel like we have to do more than we can before he will hear us.  But I was interested to read the verses a bit further down:

"Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. (6)"  The Lord didn't require those things of David before teaching him and reaching him with his love.  He just answered and heard David's patient prayer.  Maybe, sometimes, that is what the Lord is willing to do for us.  Just keep praying, and have faith.  Do what you can, but don't expect that you have to be perfect before you are heard and blessed.

"But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me" (17).

The Lord will hear and help and "set [our] feet upon a rock, and establish [our] goings."  David, having felt the love of the Lord in his need, then felt the desire to share it.  Perhaps that is one reason the Lord reaches out to us--so that we can feel of and understand more His love, and then, being touched by and filled with that, we feel a desire to help others know and see his great, merciful goodness and love towards us.  We are to bear testimony of that love.  And hope. :)
